Following on Wischmeyer’s introduction (pp. Overall, Powery and Sadler’s book is a valuable and important contribution to our understanding of a major stream of modern biblical interpretation, too often neglected or ignored in the (white) mainstream of biblical studies and ‘history of interpretation’.Īccompanied by the recent reference work Lexikon der Bibelhermeneutik (edited by Oda Wischmeyer, de Gruyter, 2009, 2013), Handbuch der Bibelhermeneutiken makes a contribution to the field of biblical hermeneutics by its comprehensiveness and cross-disciplinary character. But the indexes are thorough and somewhat compensate for this. It is a shame that there is no final bibliography, particularly any listing of the archives and sources for the various slave-narratives studied. There are also many smaller points of interest and significance (one example, interesting to me: the lack of appeal to Gal. Indeed, these early interpreters already exhibit many of the key moves fundamental to more recent approaches to biblical hermeneutics. The various narratives analysed in this book offer insightful and significant insights into biblical interpretation among those enslaved or formerly enslaved their narratives represent, as the authors note, ‘an early history of African American biblical hermeneutics’ (p. 2.7 and Acts 17.26, or the appeal to Jesus and Paul as exemplars of those who suffer injustice and hardship. In the slaves’ narratives, Powery and Sadler discover various strategies for interpreting the Bible differently, such as the alternative perspectives on racial origins and identities derived from Gen. 12.47) justification for the ownership of slaves, and religious legitimation for the punishment of those who were disloyal or disobedient.
This includes – as these narratives themselves record – ministers employed to preach to the slaves, who frequently found in Paul (and in other texts such as Lk.
